House Damage & Restoration FAQ

what you need to know when it comes to your home repair

If you’ve never faced the prospect of water, fire, or other property damage before, we know you may have questions. Below are some of the most common questions we’ve faced over the years.

You want to contact a water damage restoration company immediately. We know you’ll also want to contact your insurance company, but getting started on the water damage remediation immediately will reduce the amount of damage it ends up doing.

This process takes a couple of steps. We start by extracting all excess water from your carpet, flooring and any other materials affected by the water. We’ll then bring in specialized equipment that dries out your home. This will include dehumidifiers, air scrubbers, air movers and other equipment. This process can take from two to five days, depending on the size of the affected area and how much water got in your home. We have cutting-edge equipment, such as moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras, to test the moisture level of areas of your home so that we know when they’re dry. Depending on your specific situation, removal of carpet pads, baseboards, wood floors and cabinets may also be necessary as well as mold remediation.

There are two parts to the process. Removing excess water and drying out the affected areas of the home, plus any needed demolition of damaged areas, can take two to five days. Then comes repairing the damage done by the water. This is harder to estimate since it depends on the amount of damage in any given situation. This part can take days or weeks and would include things like replacing drywall, paint, cabinets and other items. When you have JASD, Inc. do the job, you will have a personal project manager working with you. They will help come up with a timetable for you and your insurance company that will have you getting on with your life as soon as possible.

Our company and all of our technicians are IICRC certified. IICRC is the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. This is the leading body in setting standards for water mitigation, and they outline that water damage restoration should only be done by professional, certified companies.

As you can imagine, this will vary from job to job and depend on the severity and amount of damage. If your insurance company covers water damage, then you’ll only have to pay your deductible. Getting the water damage restoration handled as quickly as possible will help reduce the amount and final cost of fixing it. Unhandled damage can lead to other problems, such as mold growth and even structural damage. We’ll survey the damage and give you an honest estimate to restore your home.

There are three different types of water:

Clean Water – This is harmless to people and typically comes from leaky pipes or water heaters or overflowing bathtubs or drains.

Gray Water – This is contaminated water that can cause sickness. It was clean but became contaminated by traveling through your home. For example, an upstairs leak may become contaminated as it travels down through the drywall and insulation.

Black Water – Sources of this are ground surface water and sewage. It is highly unsanitary and can cause harm to people.

Mold loves moisture, so any surface that is moist for long will attract it. It’s imperative that you act quickly if you notice leaky pipes or other water problems. Mold only takes 24 to 48 hours to start growing.

The most common causes of water damage include rainstorms, leaking or broken pipes and malfunctioning appliances. Roof leaks caused by wind damage are another common cause.

Sometimes, it’s hard to notice water damage. It doesn’t always take the form of a visible puddle or rushing water. Be on the lookout for the following signs of water damage:

  • Visible Mold
  • Damp Carpeting
  • Cupping in Wood
  • Floors
  • Peeling Paint or
  • Wallpaper
  • Rusting Near the
  • Shower or Tub Area
  • Water Stains in Walls or Ceilings
